For this assignment I am using the book 13 Reasons Why. The book is fairly short and an easy read, only about 250 pages, so I am just using the book as a whole. It is about Hannah Baker, a teenager who commits suicide and leaves tapes behind explaining her 13 reasons why she did it. Clay Jensen, the other main character, finds a box of the tapes on his doorstep and realizes he was one of the reasons. He spends the night going around town, visiting the locations on each of the tapes, finding out which of his classmates and community members also had something to do with it.
My reaction to the book was it was very sad. I watched the Netflix series before I read the book, but the book it very different. It was interesting that it communicates that most of the reasons big deals; being cheated on and broken up with, a friend's betrayal; but not reasons to end your life. It also shows that by Hannah ending her life, she caused a lot of pain to other people in her life, like her parents and people who she didn't realize cared about her.
The author used a lot of cause and effect, and I think his intent was to discourage other young people from making a bad choice, as well as being aware of other people struggling around you. He also uses some compare and contrast to show differences between people, places and situations.
